Job Description



Organizations Background

BGRRF is a new organization that has grown out of the pastoral services and humanitarian and development programmes implemented through the Diocese of El Obeid (DOE), in Sudan and South Sudan. The management of programme activities in South Kordofan and South Sudan (Twic) formally transitioned from the Diocese of El Obeid to the Bishop Gassis Relief and Rescue Foundation (BGRRF) in 2016. BGRRF is currently implementing humanitarian projects in South Kordofan in health, nutrition, education and most recently in food security and livelihood sectors. Trocaire is among the organisation’s funding BGRRF Food Security and Livelihood activities in Nuba Mountains in South Korfodan.

Background information on the consultancy

In a current project that is funded by Trocaire, BGRRF introduced as a new component of resilience in their humanitarian work which involves training farmer groups, provision of seeds and farm inputs and also training and supporting women to start Income Generating Activities (IGAs) and Village Savings and Lending groups (VSLA). Being a new area, there is little data available that can be used to measure the impact of these activities. To address this challenge, BGRRF has collected some baseline data that can be used to derive food security and livelihoods indicators. However, there is limited capacity within the organization to analyze the data. BGRRF is therefore offering a short contract for the purpose of building the capacity of staff in this area and to support in analyzing the data and reporting on the following indicators.

  • Food consumption scores
  • Livelihood coping strategies
  • Food security coping strategies
  • Knowledge and practice of improved farming methods

Objective (s)

The objective of the consultancy is to build the organization’s capacity to collect and analyze data on food security through a participatory approach that includes the following activities:

  1. Review the appropriateness of the current tool for the purpose of data collection and recommend on an appropriate software of analysis
  2. Review the appropriateness of the tool for collecting data on the above-mentioned indicators and make recommendations for future use
  3. Develop digital forms on KOBO platforms based on the revised tools
  4. Analyze the data, visualize and prepare a power point presentation
  5. Prepare a report with key findings( Max 8 pages)  and a 2 pager summary of the findings
  6. Conduct a 2 days training for staff (3 – 6 pax) on data management and development of digital forms on KOBO


The consultancy is for 7 working days and MUST be completed within the month of August 2019.The following are the expected deliverables:

  • Submission of a cleaned/ final dataset
  • Visualization of analysed data clearly indicating key findings per indicator/ outcome area
  • 8 pager and power presentation highlighting key statistics
  • Fully coded questionnaire on KOBO for collecting data on:
  • Food consumption scores
  • Livelihood coping strategies
  • Food security coping strategies
  • Knowledge and practice of improved farming methods
  • A 2 day’s workshop for validation of findings, Training on data management on basics of KOBO

Desired Qualifications of the consultant

  1. Minimum 3 years’ experience in Nutrition, Food Security and related fields. (Experience in Sudan context is desirable).
  2. Demonstrated experience in conducting Nutrition and Food security related assessments (experience of a similar assignment will be an advantage).
  3. Experience in using SPSS for data analysis
  4. Experience in use of ODK for data collection
  5. English language skills (report should be written in English). Ability to make clear presentations and disseminate findings to both technical and non-technical audience.

Terms of Engagement

The Consultant will receive a 30% down payment upon signing of contract and re-submission of delivery plan for the assignment. The balance of 70% will be paid within 5 days upon submission of the final report.

  • A Financial proposal with a detailed budget considering the details in the ToR and timelines therein.
